Parliamo del SOPA / Let's speak about SOPA

L'acronimo SOPA che sta per Stop On line Piracy Act è una proposta di legge in discussione alla Camera dei Rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti e presentata alla fine di Ottobre 2011 dal deputato repubblicano Lamar Smith.

La legge, così com'è, darebbe al Dipartimento di Giustizia degli Stati Uniti il potere di chiedere un'ordinanza contro i siti Internet che violano i diritti d'autore. Ottenuta l'ordinanza, il Governo, attraverso il Ministro della Giustizia potrebbe obbligare i provider (erogatori di servizi Internet) a bloccare i siti sospetti e i loro canali di finanziamento.

Le pene vanno fino a cinque anni di carcere per chi viola la legge.

Coloro che vengono colpiti dall'ordinanza hanno fino a cinque giorni di tempo per presentare appello ma intanto i siti vengono oscurati ben prima che un processo stabilisca le responsabilità.

Al di là di quali sarebbero le conseguenze e al di là delle personalissime idee di ognuno di noi, coloro che sostengono la legge sono le associazioni dell'industria cinematografica, aziende farmaceutiche, associazioni sportive e produttori di videogiochi.

Molto ampia è anche la contrapposizione al SOPA, portata avanti da importanti società che operano nel settore informatico riunite in un “gruppo di pressione” (NetCoalition) che comprende tra gli altri Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, PayPal e Wikipedia.

Queste società si starebbero accordando per mettere temporaneamente off line i loro siti come protesta contro una eventuale approvazione del SOPA.

Chi è contrario sostiene che il SOPA è un attacco alla libertà di espressione su Internet.

Noi di Officine Editoriali siamo d'accordo con i critici della proposta di legge.

Noi pensiamo che la libertà di espressione vada difesa strenuamente.

E' così che finora attraverso Internet abbiamo potuto avere notizie di iniziative che altrimenti sarebbero rimaste oscure e soffocate, anche nel sangue e nella violenza senza che noi ne sapessimo nulla e togliendo ai promotori di queste iniziative ogni possibilità di riuscita dei loro sogni.

The SOPA acronym which stands for Stop Online Piracy Act is a law proposal being discussed in the House of Representatives of the United States and presented at the end of October 2011 by Rep. Lamar Smith.

The law as it stands, would give the U.S. Justice Department the power to require an ordinance against Internet sites that violate copyrights. Obtained the ordinance, the Government, through the Minister of Justice, could force providers (Internet service dispenser) to block suspicious websites and their financing channels.

Penalties go up to five years in jail for violating the law.

Those who are affected by the ordinance have up to five days to appeal but in the meantime the sites are blacked out long before a process can define responsibilities.

Beyond what would be the consequences, and beyond the very personal ideas of each of us, those who support the law are the associations of the film industry, pharmaceutical companies, sports associations and producers of video games.

Is also very wide the opposition to the SOPA, carired out by leading names in the computer industry together in a “pressure group” (NetCoalition) which includes, among others, Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, PayPal and Wikipedia.

These companies would be getting an agreement to temporarily put off line their sites as a protest against a possible approval of SOPA.

Those against claim that SOPA is an attack on freedom of expression on the Internet.

We at Officine Editoriali agree with the critics of the proposal law.

We think that freedom of expression must be defended. It's so that we could have had so far in the Internet news of initiatives that otherwise would remain obscure and suppressed, even in the blood and violence and we never knew anything, and by taking away to the promoters of these initiatives any possibility of success of their dreams.
