Possiamo far risalire la nascita del primo e-book al 1971 e a Michael S. Hart che crea il Progetto Gutenerg con l’idea di costituire una biblioteca di versioni elettroniche di libri stampati.

Nel 1996 il Progetto Gutenberg supera i 1.000 titoli.

Nel 1998 vengono ideati e lanciati sul mercato i primi e-book reader.

Attraverso gli anni e le tecnologie, siamo arrivati al 2011 e possiamo vantare un mercato ormai affermato degli e-book e sistemi sempre più sofisticati di lettura dei formati digitali.

Anche se per il mercato degli e-book dobbiamo fare le dovute valutazioni del  mercato Italiano rispetto a quello Europeo e a quello Nord Americano, siamo ormai avviati, anche in Italia, verso l’acquisizione della lettura digitale (e della produzione di e-book) e verso una crescente accoglienza del settore da parte del pubblico.

Molte aziende tecnologiche ormai si sono lanciate nell’ideazione e nella creazione di dispositivi di lettura degli e-book sempre più sofisticati.

Tanto che è già possibile leggere un e-book su un dispositivo e-reader praticamente come se leggessimo un libro su supporto cartaceo, potendone sfogliare le pagine e potendo utilizzare il dispositivo come se fosse un vero libro con la differenza che ne contiene più di mille.

Inoltre, utilizzando un supporto digitale è possibile interagire con il libro attraverso gli ipertesti  e utilizzare in tempo reale dizionari e informazioni via Internet come ausilio alla lettura.
